Volleyball Picks Up First Conference Win
Box Score

GLENSIDE, Pa. - It was a close one, but the Albright Volleyball (11-10/1-3 Commonwealth) team managed to pull out their first conference win of the 2009 season defeating Arcadia University (7-9/0-4 Commonwealth) by the final score of 3-1 Tuesday evening.

To start the evening off, the Lady Lions dropped a 25-14 decision to the host Knights in game one. After that it turned out to be Albright’s night, but for the Lady Lions they had to earn every single point. In game two, the red and white pulled out a 26-24 victory. That was followed up with another 26-24 win in game three, and finally a 28-26 win in the crucial game four.

Albright has now won four straight this week, after going a perfect 3-0 at the Wesley College Classic on Sunday.

Proving to be one of the Lions biggest obstacles to overcome was their abundance of attack errors, all 24 of them. Arcadia did manage a match high 30, but with so many errors on the part of the Lions it made it very difficult to keep up consistent play. However the red and white did come together and work through the errors to walk away with the much needed conference win.

Two of the team’s top offensive players were Danielle Ozment and Cassie Campbell. The duo combined for 33 of the team’s 37 kills respectively. Defensively a total of four players recorded double figures in digs, while Alyssa Hoogendoorn tallied a career best 10 block assists. Leading Albright in digs was Kelly Nicodemus with 15, followed by Lauren Higgins with 14, Erin Wentzel with 13 and Alexa Jones with 10. Higgins also put forth another great performance at setter tallying a total of 33 set assists.

Volleyball returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Ursinus College for a 11 a.m. non-conference match.
