Lions Down Cougars in Non-Conference Action

DALLAS, Pa. - Led by junior catcher Matt Kozlowski (Reading, PA/Reading Central Catholic) the Lions pulled out a 10-9 victory over the Cougars of Misericordia University Tuesday afternoon.

Kozlowski who went 3-for-3 on the day also scored twice, and helped the red and white to improve their overall record to 12-14-1 on the season. Misericordia fell to 16-14 overall following the non-conference loss.

In total the two teams combined for 27 hits and six errors respectively. For the Cougars Brandon Calafut and Jeff Slanovec each went 3-for-4 at the plate. Calafut closed out Tuesday's contest with two runs and one RBI, while Slanovec recorded two RBI's and one run.

On the hill for Albright was freshman Tyler Storms (Fleetwood, PA/Fleetwood) who picked up his first win of his very young career after throwing four complete innings. The lefty allowed just three runs on one hit while also fanning two Cougars. Junior Casey Lawrence (McSherrystown, PA/Delone Catholic) earned his second save of the season securing the victory in the ninth. In his outing, Lawrence struck out one and walked another.

Misericordia threw a variety of pitchers at the Lions Tuesday afternoon. Steve Peet was handed the loss on a two inning showing in which he allowed two runs on two hits.

Albright wasted little time getting on the scoreboard going up 2-0 after the first. Misericordia cut the Lions lead down to one in the bottom of the second. The red and white then jumped out to a commanding 9-1 lead following a one run fourth and a six run fifth.

Helping the Lions to their seven runs was junior Joe Clark (Warminster, PA/William Tennent) who recorded an RBI double to left field. Clark on the year now has two doubles and one triple and is batting .333.

Following the Lions scoring spree, Misericordia managed just one additional run in the bottom half of the six to make it 9-3. Just as it seemed as if though the Lions were about to walk away with the win, the Cougars responded with six runs in the seventh to make it a one run ball game (9-8).

The Lions did manage to squeeze out one more run in the eighth to take 10-8 lead. Scoring the game winning run was Jason Dunkelberger (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) on a sacrifice fly from Clark. Albright would hold onto their lead in the eighth despite giving up one more run to the Cougars.

Misericordia retired the side in the ninth to maintain the one run deficit. However, their comeback hopes fell short as Lawrence dominated the Cougars in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win.

Baseball returns to action on Wednesday when they play host to Drew University (NJ) on Kelchner Field at 3:30 p.m. Live stats will be available and can be viewed at http://www.albright.edu/athletics/livestats/xlive.htm.
