Alvernia Sweeps Softball in Non-Conference Play
READING, Pa. - Led by sophomore Rhiannon Sorrentino the host Crusaders of Alvernia University downed the Lady Lions in back-to-back non-conference games Wednesday afternoon at Angelica Park.

Sorrentino led the two game series with four hits, three RBIs, and three runs in seven at-bats respectively. Alvernia, who improved to 11-14 on the season following Wednesday’s, wins defeated Albright by the scores of 8-0 and 8-4. Following the conclusion of the doubleheader, the Lions record stood at 3-25 overall.

For the red and white junior catcher Gloria Alfonsi (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area) led her team with a total of three hits, one RBI and two runs. One of her hits was a double to left field which scored freshman Becky Crandall (Mohnton, PA/Holy Name) to make it 8-3 in the nightcap.

Sophomore Mary Dwyer (Jacobstown, NJ/Northern Burlington) also earned a double against the Crusaders, which earned her an RBI as well. On the mound in game one for the Lady Lions was Dana Parolari (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan). In 4 1/3 innings Parolari fanned one batter and gave up six hits. All eight of the runs scored against the sophomore were unearned.

In the nightcap, Alex Tragno (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) pitched the first four innings of the contest. In that time the righty allowed eight runs on nine hits. Dwyer closed out the final two innings of Wednesday’s doubleheader and fanned one batter, and walked another.

To open the series, both teams remained scoreless through the first three innings of play. Alvernia put up the first two runs of the day in the bottom half of the fourth. They then blew the game open in the fifth with six more runs to take the five inning win. Proving to be the downfall for the red and white in those two innings were four crucial errors, which kept the Crusaders bats alive.

Moving into game two, Alvernia took an early 3-0 lead in first. Albright responded right back in the top of the second with a pair of runs of their own. The Crusaders scored two more runs in the bottom half of the second to take a 5-2 lead. Neither team would touch home plate in the third.

After a scoreless top of the fourth for the Lady Lions, Alvernia scored three more runs to go up 8-2. Albright’s final two runs of the day came in the fifth on Alfonsi’s RBI double and Dwyer’s single to left field.

Softball returns to action on Saturday when they play host to the Devils of FDU-Florham in a non-conference doubleheader. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m. on the Albright Softball Field. Live stats will be available and can be viewed at http://www.albright.edu/athletics/livestats/xlive.htm.
