READING, Pa. - On Saturday, the Lady Lions (3-19/0-6 Commonwealth) played host to the Falcons of Messiah College (18-2/4-0 Commonwealth) in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader. The Lions dropped both contests to the Falcons by the final scores of 11-0, and 12-3 in six innings of play.
In the opener, the red and white were held hitless as freshman pitcher Jessica Rhoads tossed a no-hitter to earn her 11th straight win of the season. For Albright, sophomore pitcher
Mary Dwyer (Jacobstown, NJ/Northern Burlington) threw all six innings in Friday's conference loss.
Messiah started off Saturday's contest with three runs in the top of the first inning. All three of the Falcons runs were unearned. They would then add one more run to the scoreboard in the fourth inning, followed by a two run fifth, and a five run sixth. While Messiah was adding runs to their line, Rhoads was doing her part on the mound. On the day the righty fanned 15 Albright hitters.
Moving into game two, Messiah took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Lions looking for a nightcap upset earned three straight runs in the bottom half of the first to take their first lead of the day.
Two of the Lions three hits in the nightcap came in the first inning. The team's third and final hit of the day was recorded in fourth inning when
Olivia Miller (Mohrsville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) singled up the middle. Dwyer and
Alexandra Keyes (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) each had an RBI to close out the doubleheader.
Following the Albright surge Messiah made it a one run game in the top of the second. They continued to add more runs to the scoreboard throughout the afternoon to take the 12-3 win. Helping to secure the win for the Falcons was Rhoads who closed out the final two and two-thirds innings. The first three and one-thirds innings belonged to Megan Rice who allowed three hits and three runs. Combined the two pitchers totaled 10 strikeouts respectively.
For Albright
Dana Parolari (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) threw the six inning game and tallied two strikeouts.
Softball returns to action on Thursday when travel to Moravian College for a non-conference doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 3 p.m.
