READING, Pa. - For the third consecutive year, the Albright Men's Golf team has defeated local rival Alvernia University to retain the Yocum Cup.
The two day match who began last Friday, ended Monday evening with Albright defeating the Crusaders by the final score 5.5 to 3.5. Leading the Lions to the huge victory was sophomore
Erik Thorn who closed out the afternoon with a 71.
On the day Thorn recorded a career best five birdies, as he continues his amazing play for the Lions. Also picking up key wins for the red and white were
Matt Osorio (3 and 2),
Steve Werst (3 and 2), and
Drew Reich (3 and 2).
Albright now has a 3-2 lead over Alvernia in the Yocum Cup challenge. The Yocum Cup began in 2006 and is played every year in honor of Jon Yocum who was a 1949 graduate of Albright College and was inducted into the Albright Hall of Fame in 1991. He served as head golf pro locally at Galen Hall and Reading Country Club. He is also well known for being the golf instructor for World Golf Hall of Famer Betsy King.
He coached the Alvernia golf team from 1983-88 and again from 1991-2000. He guided the Crusaders to NAIA District 19 champion's trophies three straight years and won the inaugural Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Championship in 1993. He was inducted into the Alvernia University Hall of Fame as part of the first class in 2008 and is also a member of the Berks County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
Men's Golf returns to action on Thursday when they take part in the Messiah College Falcon Classic which is scheduled to begin at noon.
