Zimmerman Steals Her Way Into the Record Books

Box Score

MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina – On the first day of their spring trip to Myrtle Beach, the Lady Lions (1-4) had a sensational afternoon defeating the Corsairs of the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth by the final score of 10-2 in five innings of play Sunday afternoon.  However it was senior Kelli Zimmerman who stole the show with seven stolen bases to become the new singe game and all-time career stolen bases leader at Albright.

On the day Zimmer led her team with two hits in three at-bats and touched home plate a total of four times through the five inning contest.  The shortstop also tallied seven stolen bases which set a new single game record at Albright.  Those seven steals also pushed Zimmerman past the all-time career stolen bases record as well.

The original single game record was set in 1988 by Nicole Rice and Kelly Rogan with four each.  The career record belonged to Terry Castro who set it in 2004 with 30 career stolen bases.  Zimmerman is now just four steals away from tying the single season record of 22, and is currently sitting with 38 career steals as well.

The win which was the first of the season for the red and white, also marked the first career coaching win for Albright head coach Amber Nichols. Nichols, who took over the program last season, led the Lady Lions to a dominant victory against UMass Dartmouth.

As a team, the Lady Lions totaled 10 hits and took advantage of three Corsair errors to earn the non-conference victory.

Freshman Nikki Schwenk also had a solid afternoon totaling a pair of hits in her three visits to the plate as well as three RBI's.

In the circle Allie Frank picked up the victory going on five innings and allowing just seven hits on the afternoon. The Malvern native struck out four batters and walked only two on her way to her first collegiate victory and her first complete game.

Softball returns to action tomorrow morning when they take on Baptist Bible College at 11:30 a.m. and Philadelphia Biblical University at 1:30 p.m.
