AUBURNDALE, Fl. – The Lions hungry for their first win of the 2010 season got it Monday afternoon in game one of a two game series between Albright (1-6) and St. Norbert College (2-2). On the day each team walked away with a win with the Lions taking a 7-5 victory in the opener, while the Green Knights took a 17-7 win in the closer.
Leading the Lions to their first win of the season was sophomore Tommy Canuso and junior
Rob Mancinelli. Canuso made it a 5-2 ball game in the fifth when he jerked his first career home run over the right field fence.
Following a three run top of the 7th by St. Norbert, Mancinelli stepped up to the plate in the bottom half of that inning and crushed a two-run game winner over the left field fence.
On the mound, senior righty
Casey Lawrence battled throughout the afternoon and picked up his first win of the year. The McSherrystown native surrendered five runs, two of where were earned, on eight hits. He also retired eight batters, and walked just one hitter.
Shane Stein and
Justin Danser both recorded a pair of hits in the opener. Stein also managed one RBI and two runs scored, while Danser tallied two RBI's and one run scored.
After surrendering a run in the top of the first, the Lions bounced back in the third to take a 2-1 lead. The Green Knights then evened the score at 2-2 in the next at-bat, but just like before the Lions retook the lead with a two run fifth inning and a one run sixth inning.
Down but not out St. Norbert evened the score in the top of the seventh, which forced the Lions to come up to the plate for the bottom half of the frame. However it did not take long for the red and white to secure the win.
With two outs and a man on first and 2-2 count, Mancinelli jumped all over a fast ball and dropped it about 50 feet behind the left fence wall. For St. Norbert, all eight of their hits came from their first four batters, with Jordan Powers leading the afternoon with three hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
In game two, the Lions fell into an early 5-0 hole after the first inning. However they did manage to claw their back throughout the afternoon, and eventually made it a one run game in the fifth (7-6). Unfortunately, St. Norbert regained control of the nightcap with a seven run bottom of the fifth inning to jump to a 14-6 lead.
From there, the Green Knights would take on three more runs through the final innings to split the series with the Lions.
At the plate, Albright totaled 10 hits in game two, while St. Norbert recorded 13 hits. Matt Hannon led his squad with three hits, six RBI's and two runs scored.
Danser tallied three hits of his own and had two RBI's and two runs scored to close out the afternoon.
Freshman Kevin O'Neill made his first career start, and was handed the loss after a four inning appearance on the hill. St. Norbert's Jeff LeJeunesse recorded his first win of the year in his 4 2/3 outing.
Baseball returns to action on Wednesday when they take on Knox College in a doubleheader slated begin at 10 a.m.
