ANNVILLE, Pa. - In what has become his greatest season to date, junior guard
Zac Shaeffer has been announced as the 2010 Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.
Along with his player of the year honor Shaeffer also earned a spot on the First Team, and was joined by junior
Matt Ashcroft who was named Second Team All-Conference for the first time in his career.
As the Lions top-2 leading scorers this hot-shooting duo have been dominant their junior campaigns. Not only do they lead Albright in the points column, but are amongst the top-5 scorers in the entire Commonwealth Conference, with Shaeffer leading the field with his 18.3 points per game. For Ashcroft his 15.1 points per game, marks a career best for the Reading native, who also ranks second on team in three-pointers made (68) and free throw percentage (80.0%) behind Shaeffer.
Shaeffer lead's the Lions in both categories with 69 made three's and is currently shooting 84.4% from the line. On the year, Shaeffer has totaled 10 or more points in 18 games, which included his 44 point scoring spree in the double-overtime win over Alvernia University. Ashcroft's season high came right after the New Year when he scored 30 points against Misericordia University.
The duo has averaged over 29 minutes of action per game this season, and are both shooting over 44% from the field, and 36% from behind the arc. Ashcroft is also one of the Lions top-3 rebounders this season with 107 total boards (4.1 rpg).
On the year, Ashcroft and Shaeffer have been named conference players of the week a total of six times, with Shaeffer also earning ECAC South Region Player of the Week honors and D3Hoops.com Team of the Week honors as well.
