Freshman
Erin Hand scored the game's only goal in the 18th minute as the Albright College women's soccer defeated host Swarthmore in the ECAC South quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Hand scored after a ball skipped across the area and snuck past Swarthmore goalkeeper
Marie Mutryn, leaving the Albright freshman to finish into the open goal.
The Lions made the goal stand up thanks in part to seven saves from senior goalkeeper
Olivia Giuliano, including an amazing stop in the 34th minute to deny
Alexa Ross. After Ross curled a shot towards the far upper corner, Giualino somehow got a hand to it at full extension to tip it over the bar.
The Lion defense did its part four minutes later, with both
Kirstie Potteiger and
Mel Sullivan clearing chances off the line in a dangerous flurry for Swarthmore.
Giuliano came charging out of her goal early in the game to smother a near-breakaway chance, and then came out of her goal again to get a hand on
Emma Sindelar's chance.
Albright was the only lower-seeded team in the bracket to win, and will face #2 Stevenson in the semifinals, at Frostburg State on Saturday.
