Albright College sophomore
Daniel Sobolewski was one of just four Division III athletes named to the Fred Mitchell Award September Recognition List. The Mitchell Award is given to the nation's top collegiate place-kicker among more than 750 FCS, Division II, III, NAIA and NJCAA football teams.
The Award is named for
Fred Mitchell, the record-setting place-kicker, Wittenberg University Athletic Hall of Famer, author, philanthropist and Chicago Tribune sports columnist.
The recipient of the Fred Mitchell Award will be chosen based on excellence on the football field and in the community. The Award's Watch List is released in August, top performers are recognized monthly during the college football season, and the winner is announced in mid-December.
"The first month of the 2013 college football season had quite a few college football games decided by late scores by place-kickers, long snappers, holders and blockers on special teams. We are pleased to recognize place-kickers that were nominated by their schools for extraordinary performance during the month," said Mitchell.
One of 26 September honorees across all divisions, Sobolewski has scored 27 points from 5-of-9 FG's and 12-of-13 PAT's. Two of those four field goal misses have been from 48 and 51 yards.
He set the school record with 51-yard FG against Stevenson on September 14, and scored 12 points in 30-14 win over Kean University on September 7.
Sobolewski was named a BSN National Player of the Week, USA College Football National Special Teams Player of the Week and D3football.com Team of the Week after the win over Kean. He was named the MAC Special Teams Player of the Week after each of the team's first two games of 2013.
Sobolewski was also one of just three players below junior year named to the list. Two of the four Division III selections came from the Middle Atlantic Conference, with Lycoming senior
Zach Czap also being listed.
