Seniors Honored at 2013 Athletics Banquet

The Albright College athletic department held its annual athletics banquet on Monday at Stokesay Castle, honoring the 2013 graduating class.

The Abe Karlip Outstanding Senior Female Athlete award went to swimmer Kari Keller. Keller won an individual MAC title this season in the 200 breast, and has helped lead Albright to two consecutive MAC championships.

The race for Most Outstanding Senior Male Athlete resulted in a tie between two All-American performers. Men's basketball captain Dave Singleton, an honorable mention DIII News All-American, was honored after an impressive statistical season for the Lions.

Singleton shared the award with football standout Scott Pillar, a two-time All-American. Pillar was one of just two wide receivers in the nation named to the AFCA Coaches All-America Team, and will report to rookie training camp this week after signing with the St. Louis Rams.

Pillar also shared the Derek Kehoe Memorial Award. Named in honor of the Albright men's basketball player who passed away in October after a battle with cancer, the award is given to the senior athlete who personifies the characteristics of Derek: hard work, toughness, and good citizenship. Pillar was recognized after coming all the way back from a serious spinal injury to earn All-American honors in 2011 and 2012.

Also winning the Kehoe award was baseball first baseman Vinny Morgan, who overcame several family tragedies and stayed focused both on the field and in the classroom.

Morgan was also given the Memorial Prize of the Class of 1926. The Memorial Prize of the Class of 1926 is given to a senior man and woman, who during their four years at Albright has shown qualities of marked leadership, been of good strong character, and has participated and taken an active interest in athletics.

The Female winner of the Memorial Prize was Taylor Kutz, a school record holder in the 400 meters for the women's track team. Kutz has led by example for the track program, while placing multiple times at conference championships.

The NCAA Woman of the Year award went to softball's Miriah Wilson. This award honors a senior female student-athlete from each NCAA member institution, who has distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate career in the areas of academic excellence, service, and leadership. Wilson has succeeded in the classroom and participated in numerous extracurricular activities while being a four-year varsity athlete.

The Eugene Shirk Award, presented to the senior students with high scholastic standing and who were members of the cross-country, tennis, track, golf, or swim teams went to Lindsay Boyd (women's track & field) and Adam Kurtz (men's swimming). Boyd holds a GPA over 3.5, while Kurtz is a seven-time MAC individual event champion.

The Red and White Club Awards were given to two seniors who demonstrated a positive attitude and loyalty to Albright Athletics. Alee Gormley, a four-year starter on the women's soccer team, and Connor Unger, a member of the cross country, swimming and track teams, were this year's winners.

The Student Athletic Advisory Council (S.A.A.C) Sportsmanship Award is reserved for the senior athletes who have exemplified the qualities of outstanding sportsmanship both on and off the field; as well as demonstrated the qualities of civility, concern for others, and a sense of fair play. The 2013 honors went Kirstie Potteiger (women's soccer) and Adam Galczynski (football).

The Neal Harris Academic Excellence Award is presented to the senior athletes with the highest GPA, who earned a minimum of four varsity letters. Volleyball's Alex Jones took the women's award with a GPA of 3.90, while swimmer Matt Bauer was the male winner after maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA over four years as a student-athlete.

In addition to senior awards, Albright also recognized its annual Most Outstanding Freshmen. Kelecia Harris was a dominant force for the Lions' women's basketball team, earning Commonwealth Conference, ECAC and Mid-Atlantic Region Rookie of the Year honors while being named to the DIII News national All-Freshman Team.

Swimmer Matt Runtas was the male rookie award winner, after participating in two MAC relay records and helping the Lions to another MAC team championship.

The Friend of Albright Award was given to local businessman Jim Radwanski, of Perrotto Builders.
