Men's Swimming in First; Women in Third After Day 1 of MAC's

Day 1 Meet Results

Day 1 Scores

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – After closing out day one of the three day Middle Atlantic Conference championship Albright men's swimming is currently leading all teams with 231 points, while women's swimming is currently sitting in third place with 164.5 points.

The men's first place score puts them 24 points ahead of second place Misericordia University. The women currently trail second place Misericordia by 15.5 points and first place Widener University by 22.5 points.

To start off the afternoon the women's 200 yard free relay team of Tricia Janowiak, Katy Oeste, Amanda Fisher, and Aimee Snyder placed second with a combined time of 1:41.18. Their male counterparts closed out the opening relay with a third place finish. The team of Tim Pierce, Mike McBride, Adam Kurtz and Chris Sheerer closed out the event with a final time of 1:27.63.

In the women's 500 free Allie Fies placed third with her time of 5:20.64, which set a new personal best for the senior swimmer. Earning a 13th place finish in the 500 was classmate Kelly Williams with her time of 5:36.97.

The men's 500 free was dominated by the Lions as they swam away with five of the top six spots and most importantly 78 points. Leading the way was senior Eric Kramer who won his third MAC individual championship. His time of 4:43.50 was over a second faster than Widener's Jordan Mulligan, who placed second.

Finishing in third place in the 500 was Zach McElheny with his time of 4:52.21. After that was Matt Bauer in fourth with a time of 4:53.21. Earning a fifth place finish was Rainer Floeter with his time of 4:53.62, while Sean Spellacy placed sixth with a final time of 4:58.42.

Sophomore Madi Hauk led the Lady Lions in the 200 IM with her second place time of 2:12.84. Right behind her in third place was Snyder with her time of 2:13.25. Kari Keller posted a seventh place finish in the event with a time of 2:19.20.

Just like the 500 free, the Lions dominated the men's 200 IM. This time it was Joe Deighan who led the way with his first place time of 1:55.37. Right behind him in second was Sheerer with a time of 1:55.66. Finishing in fourth place was Steve Thomas with his time of 1:58.55.

In the incredibly quick 50 free, Janowiak led the red and white with a third place finish and a final time of 24.96 seconds. Oeste recorded a seventh place finish in the 50 free with her time of 25.74. Fisher finished tied for 11th place with her time of 26.23.

Pierce and McBride swam away with a second and fifth place finish in the men's 50 free respectively. Pierce led the Lions with his time of 21.76, while McBride recorded a time of 22.23. Richard Edwards also competed in the event and finished in 13th place (22.77). Bobby McNair closed out the 50 free for the Lions with a 16th place finish (22.95).

To close out the evening the women's 400 yard medley relay team of Janowiak, Keller, Fies, and Hauk placed third with a time of 4:04.88. However, it was the men's 400 medley relay that ended the meet on an exciting note.

Both Albright and Misericordia would go on to break the pool, championship, and conference records. Unfortunately it was Misericordia who would earn the victory with their time of 3:28.03. For their Lions their combined time of 3:28.48 also set a new program record, one that would now belong to Sheerer, Deighan, Kurtz, and Kramer.

Day two of the conference championship is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. from the Christian Youth Center.
