OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Albright women's basketball team concludes its pregame warm-up routine with a pair of players practicing ball handling and passing. Juniors
Kelecia Harris and
Emily O'Donnell are warm-up partners and at the end of the warm-up period, O'Donnell will take a pass from Harris and shoot a three-pointer. While the three-point attempt is light hearted, that practice almost paid huge dividends for the Lions in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament Championship game on Saturday versus Stevenson.
With Albright trailing 53-50, O'Donnell fired a three-pointer with 8 seconds remaining in regulation but the shot did not fall and the Mustangs claimed the Commonwealth Championship with a 54-50 victory over the Lions in the Owings Mills Gymnasium.
Albright, which battled foul difficulty and a tough Stevenson defense all night, saw its six-game winning streak come to an end. The Lions now await their fate in regards to a possible berth in the NCAA Tournament which will be announced on Monday.
Stevenson, which overcame foul trouble of its own, improved to 23-3 on the season and secured the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
The Mustangs used a rally late in the second half to overcome the Lions.
After
Kelecia Harris gave Albright a 42-38 lead with 7:47 to play in the game, the Mustangs fought back.
Kayla Kelly answered with a layup, and the Mustangs tied the game at 42-42 when Kayleigh Guzek converted a pair of free throws with 6:44 to play in the game.
Kelly capped the 6-0 run with a pair of free throws to give Stevenson a 44-42 lead with 6:22 left in the second half.
Jane Joyce made one of two free throws for Albright to end the run and bring the Lions to within 44-43 at the 6:05 mark.
Kelly then added two free throws and a jumper to push the Mustangs lead to 48-43 with 4:53 left in the game.
Joyce and Sara Tarbert exchanged free throws and Kelly converted a three-point play giving Stevenson a 52-44 lead with 2:27 left in the contest.
Albright would not go away though.
Harris and O'Donnell made back-to-back baskets to cut the lead to 52-48 with 1:20 left in the game.
Kyarra Harmon made one of two free throws, but O'Donnell scored inside to trim the lead to 53-50 with 42 seconds to play.
On the Mustangs next trip, Tarbert missed inside and O'Donnell collected the rebound setting up the Lions for their game-tying attempt.
Harris finished the game with 17 points and 15 rebounds to lead Albright, while
Shannon Thomas had nine points and five rebounds.
O'Donnell added eight points and seven rebounds and
Jessica Venturelli had seven points and four rebounds.
